Byte is a 2024 tech-horror creature feature produced by Fright Teck Pictures, Millman Productions, and Ron Lee Productions. Written and directed by indie horror veteran Eddie Lengyel, the film updates classic werewolf mythology for the smartphone generation by introducing a deadly mobile application that triggers lycanthropic transformations. The film premiered at the HorrorHound Film Festival before releasing digitally on major streaming platforms like Tubi – https://tubitv.com/movies/100018594/byte
The story unfolds on Halloween night in Ohio, where a group of college friends discovers a mysterious mobile application called “Byte.” Urged by curiosity, a student named Jett (Marshall Vargas) downloads the app, which unexpectedly delivers a physical vial of blood and instructs the group to perform a graveyard ritual under a full moon. Although the friends initially dismiss the digital ritual as an unverified online hoax, savage, animalistic attacks soon begin plaguing their small town. As the body count rises, April (Kayden Bryce) and Nora (Carlie Allen) suspect that Jett has transformed into a monster, eventually uncovering that the app was engineered for revenge by a grieving scientist, Professor Rader (Bill Schroeder), alongside researcher Professor Grey (Debbie Scaletta).
To overcome the steep financial constraints of micro-budget creature design, Fright Teck Pictures utilized a creative “Puzzle Piece” special effects strategy. Instead of relying on expensive full-body animatronics, the production focused its budget on a high-quality “hero” werewolf costume crafted by Midnight Studios FX. Cinematographer Mick Kunz hid the budget constraints by highlighting specific elements, like a singular clawed hand and a detailed snout, through sharp backlighting and deep shadows. This resourcefulness resonated well with the indie horror community, earning a 9/10 score from critics at the Horror Society, who drew favorable comparisons to classic werewolf cinema like Silver Bullet.
