Supergirl Movie

by : Roger Priebe

I cannot believe that I am writing these words, but I might have seen one of the best films of 2026, and it’s Supergirl. If you had told me that even a week ago, I would not have believed you.

Supergirl was created in 1959 in Action Comics #252, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. Her birth name is Kara Zor-El, cousin to Kal El, better known as Superman. In the past 67 years, she has had many different origins, interpterion’s, and even a death.

Supergirl is played by House of the Dragon co-star Milly Alcock. She does a great job bringing both pain, and hope in the same movie. And what it truly means to help the helpless and be a hero that she is meant to be.

The main co-star who steals the movie is Jason Momoa who plays Lobo. Lobo is a deadly space bounty hunter. This is role Jason was born to play. You can tell he had a blast playing this character. Let’s all hope we get a Lobo feature film soon.

The movie uses a 8 issue mini series called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as starting point for the movie. Which itself is loosely based on the Film “True Grit”. The comic is written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopes.

The screenplay was written by newcomer Ana Nogueira, who seems to have more acting credits then writing credits. But Ana turned in a masterful script that no one saw coming. More about that in the spoiler section. Ana is always writing the upcoming Teen Titans and wonder Woman movies. She is definitely a writer to keep a eye on for the foreseeable future.

The movie was directed by Chris Gillespie. He has directed a bunch of movies and tv shows. Most notably Cruella, and the 2011 remake of Fright Night. He is currently the executive producer/director for the apple tv show “Your Friends and Neighbors.

The plot of the movie is what you get from the trailers. Kara out partying for her birthday on planets without a yellow sun, so she is basically powerless so she gets to feel the effects of alcohol (more on this in the spoiler section). There is a team of ravengers that rob and kill whatever/whoever they want. The ravengers kill a young girls family and now she wants revenge. During this process, supergirl’s dog Krypto gets shot with a poison dart. So now Krypto only has 3 days until the poison kills him.

**********Spoilers Section**********

The theme of this movie is all about trauma!!! No one seems to understand that.

This version of Supergirls origin is she is born after Krypton has exploded. She was part of the floating city called Argo City. Then this space floating city starts dying after many years, Kara’s Parents decide to send their 16 year old daughter to earth. Kara doesn’t want to go. She wants to stay and die with her parents.

She arrives on Earth and is greeted by her cousin Kal El. But she has no connection to him or this planet. She has a loneliness no one can relate to. So when she goes to all these other planets with a red sun so can get drunk, it’s not that she can go out and party. Kara is numbing. She is going to through something no one else can relate to.
Clark doesn’t understand that, he has had a family since day 1.

As we saw in the trailer, Krypto gets shot and will die in 3 days. The only thing in the universe that she truly loves is going to die unless she does something. That is more loss, which adds on to even more trauma.

We also have this other young girl out for revenge because our main villain killed her whole family. You as the viewer want to see her to kill this man for what he has done. But at the end, Kara stops her from killing him, and then ends up killing the villain herself. She does this because shes doesn’t the girl to have to carry the guild and burden of killing a man. Kara is already broken and she shoulders are strong enough to carry that burden for her.

At the end she decides to stop running and to return to Earth and maybe try and fix herself.

I give it a 9 out of 10
